Why no Satellite TiVo?

According to TVPredictions.com, DirecTV just bought ReplayTV. Sounds like they are heading in that direction in the future.

Can you blame Directv for not paying the ridiculous fees and developing their OWN dvr's, I dont. I hope tivo sinks or gets bought out. Ive owned one, and almost bought the S3 with cable, but it being overpriced along with the monthly fee made me lose any love for Tivo I had.

Lets see, right after I swapped from cable I paid $99 for my HR20 when it came out(dropped the overly slow HR10-250 tivo) which is about $800 less than I coulda got a S3 for and I pay less than half the DVR fee that tivo charges. I dont miss them for a minute.

And yes, the external storage is not completely supported yet, but my 750gig drive works flawlessly. And no, you dont have the freedom with your drive like on a Tivo, BUT D* and E* are subjected to DRM by HBO and other while I suspect Tivo is not.

If D* charged tivo prices just to add a few features, most people would be pissed.

I think the Replaytv acquisition shows promise.

Well.. here's another question..
The main answer I'm getting about the TiVo question is that D* are E* are going to merge before the TiVo thing happen. So as far as the D* DVRs go, is the interface and functionality similar to that of the Standard DVR Plus? That's all I'm familiar with. I got it for my mom for Xmas last year (easily securing my spot for the "Best Gift Given at Xmas Award.) Can I expect similar results from the HR?

Additional storage versus replacement storage has nothing to do with DRM. It is just a matter of managing two filesystems or folders instead of one. I am not asking to move content by moving the harddrive. I am asking to add storage without losing content.

I think one of the problems TiVo would also have in trying to market a stand alone box, is acquiring and downloading all the programming info-I'd think that without D*'s cooperation, that would be hard to do, even if people were willing to buy one.

The problem isn't cooperation from D*. They don't have to beg for that.

The problem is that there's no way to get a digital version of the material to save on the hard drive. TiVo would have to figure out some way of capturing the component signal and digitizing it. They don't currently have the technology to do that. It would be a tough sell to peddle an HD recording solution that wasn't digital.
