The pixalation comes from not enough bandwidth, we generally advise to drop down to the next level if that is happening.
All depends on your set up, Me I couldn't do that as I have high demands, but you'd be surprised how many get the TOP level and never really use what it's capable.
we drop down a level of service and they no longer have issues.

Sometimes it's people ordering more than they need other times it's the CSR up selling the sub when the area won't support it.

Comcast cable in either the 12 or 16Mb/s variety, depending on what the current promotions are. Reliability has been fine. It goes out 3-4 times a year for 20 minutes to a couple of hours.

Couple of money saving tips if you go comcast. One is that in many areas they'll bundle cable tv with internet for less than the internet alone. In my area, they offer basic analog cable for $8 a month but cut ~$12 a month off the internet cost when bundled, so I save $4/mo by having tv I dont use. Second, they run promotions all the time and about once a year they'll let you get the promo price as an existing customer. Right now I'm on a $29/mo package of 12Mb/s internet with basic analog cable for a year. Last year it was $29/mo for 16Mb/s with basic analog for six months.

Your best bet is to do an online 'chat' with them from your logged in comcast account on the comcast web site and just ask if there are any promotions you can take advantage of. 80% of the time you'll just get one. The rest of the time they'll give you a number to call your local office who will give you the best deals. For some reason calling their regular main number doesnt get much.

On the speed tests, try several and take the lowest number as plausible. Many ISP's will detect a speed test and raise your download levels during the test. Others will pass short bursts of data at full speed and then insert 'pauses' in the transmission to cut the real rate significantly. Some speed tests can detect the 'turbo' operation. I havent run any tests in a bit but I found that my 16Mb/s service would test out at first at the full 15-16Mb, but would drop to ~4-5Mb/s when tested extensively with a lot of data pauses.

Well guy's, I've been with Verizon phone for 10 years now and internet for 6-7 now... They only offer 3 mg and while I've had good service for the most part, I'm getting tired of paying for 3 mg and getting about 1-2.

My 3 mg service is costing me $ 35. plus phone of course, coming to about $ 78 all together.

Today I had Verizon out again to fix the static which also slows the internet and the guy said he did, claims I'm getting 3306 at the modem, but when I run a speed test at Speakeasy it shows 1-2 m. tops.

Awhile back I had 3 mg for $ 29 and then it went up to $ 35.

The Dark Side (my cable company, haven't been with them since '91) is offering me 8 mg for a promo price of $ 24 for 6 months, then it goes to $ 54, if I get a phone plan with them, it drops the internet by $ 10, the phone package is $ 13 (basic + about 7 of acces. I want) so thats about $20.
seeing they gave me $ 10 off for bundling, I'm getting the phone for about $ 10.

If I keep the phone and the internet after the 6 months the package looks like this : $ 44 for Internet and $20 (approx) for phone + 10 in taxes. Thats all puts me at around $ 74, which is right about where I was before with the Verizon service.

What do you guy's think ? Go to the Dark Side (only for internet and possibly phone) Or stay where I'm at ?

Just me, but since 'net speed is important to me, I'd switch. It's a bummer that you don't have FIOS where you are (I asume you don't?). I've had great svc with their 'net & landline phone svc.

Nope, doubt we'll ever see it here, seeing Verizon has sold out in our area.

Seeing I'll then be using a Cable modem (bad words in my line of work !), I will need to get a wireless set up , set up as well as I don't think they deal with that and thier CM 's don't do wireless from what I've been told, but will do more research today.

I have TWC/RR getting 10+ down and 1+ up, bundled with a cable package comparable to Dish 250+ with HD, and two hd receivers (one being a dvr) for $85 a month year 1 and $95 a month year two. Sweet deal for the price.

I agree with cfb, most of the speed tests are too short. The ISPs will give you a short burst of high speed and then slow down when downloading a larger file.

I had ATT phone and DSL, it cost me around $75.00 a month, the internet does lag and slow sometime, when on movie showing, it lag most the time.

I am trying to terminate ATT and get cable for internet and internet phone service from other company, it only cost me $25 plus tax etc on phone service each month, but can dial all over USA and some foreign countries without the long distant cost. My local cable is Time Warner and I am checking and see how much they cost on just the internet service. Fios is way to expensive about $60 a month plus.

I have fiber optic and WISP through my employer, which happens to be my ISP.

On the fiber side, I've seen DL speeds as high as 89Mbps and uploads around 35Mbps. On the wireless side, it's been as high as 9.7Mbps DL and 4Mbps uploads. With my dual WAN router, that means I've had speeds as high as 99Mbps DL and 39Mbps upload.

Cable modem....Earthlink across TWC's lines( as a result of the TW/AOL merger feds said TWC had to share) I get 6mbps down and a tortiselike 380kbps up..
I don't do a lot of big file uploading ,so at this point I don't care.

I have earthlink over comcast lines but just received a notice in the mail where they are discontinuing the unlimited service so now i gotta find new service. I was pauing $29.99

Yep...Comcast is one of the reasons why the feds are pushing net neutraility.
Some ISP's are charging by use or getting ready to charge.
TWC hasn't gone in this direction....Yet.
If ISP's don't succumb to the temptation to suck every dime possibel out of the consumer ,the governemnt will step in and regulate the hell out of them. The result of that will invariably be, we pay more.
It is up to the ISP'a to police themsleves and maintain a fair marketplace or suffer the consequences of crushing government regulation.

I get my internet as well as phone service from WOW...otherwise known as Wide Open West. I get 15 down and 1 up...with an option to get as much as 2 up. Don't really need that much upload power though. Just waiting for them to get to 20 down like their main competitor which is Insight.

I have wideband internet provided by TWC with uploads supposedly reaching 100mb but I usually get around 72-85 and downloads at 58mb. I pay $69.99. Fios isnt available yet or ever even though its across the street they charge 119.99 for the same service.

I use the cable over builder here in the northeast RCN. The fiber ends less than 1000 feet from my door. I have the 20/2 package and pay 59.95 for it. I had Comcast, but I was having issues with my modem and I wanted to be rid of paying the no cable tv price penalty and get rid of the 250 gig cap. I just added a 20 dollar with modem rental included digital phone line. Includes unlimited USA/Canada Calling. 15 for the line, 5 for the modem. They just switched from analog lines to Packet Cable Phone, works great for faxing. I use a 3rd party voip company phonepower for voice. I also have Sprint for 3g/4g data which I pay 59 for. I use Directv for TV. I could get dsl, but its too slow for my needs at a max of 7 meg. I would get Fios if Boston had it.
