Got my HD DNS shutoff Notice yesterday

How can they shut if off, when i still have my Samsung 360 in the bedroom

I assume because you have selected to receive the Chicago area HD locals via DirecTV. Thus you will also need to out that MPEG2 Samsung just like you did to the make & model in the den. I thought it was clear that if/when a sub chooses their offered HD locals, that the DNS would be turned off? Am I wrong?

You do have at least one MPEG4 correct? The MPEG2 feeds were cut off to you because you selected to sub to the HD LIL right? They expect you to change out all the HD boxes you have, not just one, or understand that if you choose to keep any additional MPEG2 HD receivers, that they will not get those DNS HDs anymore. So even if you have 2, 3 or more, changing just one to the MPEG4 isn't going allow you any special circumstance to keep both HD services as I read it; its one OR the other. That notice will ONLY be effecting you, it wans't a TOTAL shut-off notice for all MPEG2 DNS.

Disturbing. I was assured by a "resolution specialist" this would not happen to me. I have four active waivers in place, so maybe that makes me safe, but who knows? I need to get on the horn and call the higher ups at Direct to ensure I never get one of these cards......

2. Why were you granted waivers? Are your affiliates O&O or are you in an unserved area (or non grade a area)?

3. Are you saying a "resolution specialist" specifically said when your DMA is served by HD LIL, and you choose to sub to that service, you will still keep all your DNS?

i got mine yest. as well. i haven't even got hd locals yet.(sup. in june) the date of the termination is 5/24. i called and was told i got the letter by mistake. and the dns wouldn't be shut off til my hd locals are in place.

2. I live 45 miles from the towers and cannot erect a antenna in my condo. All four network affiliates granted me a full waiver. Only one is O&O (NBC) and apparently they are being sold and will no longer be O&O.
3. Yes, I called and wrote to Direct before installing the new dish and receiver because I did not want to lose the NY HD channels. Effectively, this cripples my HD Tivo. I was told in no uncertain terms that unless I moved, I would keep HD DNS.

I will call and write them again to make sure this is the case. Otherwise, I have no incentive to remain with Direct...especially if there is no mgeg4 HD DVR for another 8 or 9 months.

Those waivers might be protecting you, but man everything I have read to date has said waivers are subject to being revoked as HD LIL is offered and subsequently subscribed. As I also remember waivers are only based on SD signal grades as there is no digital grading and waiver process yet. Good luck and keep us posted..

That is totally weird. My local Fox engineer told me that the main reason that so many locals didn't want to give waivers was that they weren't able to revoke them once the MPEG4 signals became available. So who is telling the truth?

Waivers can be revoked all too easy. Affiliates don't "want" to issue waivers; they are on the side that fought, and continue to fight, the allowance of DBS retransmission of affiliates as it is both SD and HD; so it should be real easy in this case to determine the truth..

FCC Eyes DTV Distant Nets Regulations
The Federal Communications Commission is taking the next step in its ongoing - and sometimes controversial - work tied to distant network signals delivered to satellite TV subscribers.

The commission on Monday released a proposal that aims to amend its rules to include measurement procedures for determining the strength of a digital broadcast television (DTV) signal at any specific location. The final procedures would be used to determine whether households are eligible to receive distant DTV network signals that are retransmitted by satellite TV services.

The Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act (SHVERA) directed the FCC to provide Congress with a report on its findings and recommendations for any revisions that might be needed for standards and procedures used to determine eligibility for distant network signals. Last December, the FCC issued a report to Congress on the matter, and suggested the agency should to conduct a rulemaking proceeding to specify procedures for measuring the field strength of digital television signals at individual locations.

The FCC will take comments on the issue.

Right, the FCC announced that same thing before a long time ago.. There is still (to date) no official grading / measurement of digital like there is for SD, nor is their any current digital waivers process. SEND those well educated email & phone comments to the FCC and any reps that serve on appropriate committees!

God it best be by next year! I am so sick of the NAB and DMAs (and sports blackouts) and affiliates. In this day and age of satellite it is way too out of date! The system no longer makes any since nor works effectively for the users.

Yes they will make the rules once they are no longer needed.

How can you expect to get both your local HD channels and the east coast feeds both? I would pay anything to get either and people are upset they will not get BOTH?

What about if you have a H20 and HR10-250, will they also pull the plug if you get the HD LIL's since there is no MPEG4 replacement for that box yet?

I wouldn't jump on the H20 MPEG4 bandwagon just yet then.
