GOES 16 GRB downlink vs GVAR

I asked TBS about the availability of the TBS6903, which is not currently available on the www.tbsdtv.com website. I got the following reply from their sales department:

"Thank you very much for your inquiry , TBS6903 is stopped production for long time, TBS6903X is the successor, it has all the fucntions of TBS6903 , or can you tell me what's your requirement? we can help to check and confirm , thank you ."

So I told them that the TBS6903 worked very well for receiving GOES GRB weather satellite images, but I tried the TBS6903X and the error rate was much higher than the TBS6903. So high that not very many images get through.

We determined that I have the old version of the TBS6903X, and a newer version is now available. They offered to send me a sample of the new version of the card for testing, and I took them up on that offer.

Also I now have a direct email for their support engineer who can assist me if I run into problems. So hopefully the new TBS6903X will work and there will continue to be a relatively low cost option for the reception of GRB.

Sorry to revive an old forum thread but has anyone had luck using sdrs like the hackrf and the software package satdump for receiving goes grb images. I just got a 8ft dish and built up a feed for it (dual monopole cantenna feed with hybrid coupler) but haven't been able to get any useful data via satdump. My snr is around 7 to 8dB which I think is on par for an 8ft dish (maybe even a little low).

Additionally has there been any more development/ testing with the tbs6903x that shows it is usable now for grb reception?

It is possible to get GRB from satdump via a hackrf but its not ideal

I'd suggest joining Satdumps discord or matrix space. I and other people can help you out more there. SatDump (bottom left)

On a side note..... I require the latest version of Grbstreamer if anyone can provide it would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately the TBS6903X does not get a low enough error rate to be usable for GRB. I spent a few months trying to tweak better performance out of it and failed.

My recommendation is to create a saved search on ebay for "TBS6903" OR "TBS6983". Eventually someone will list one for sale and you'll get an email. There were several last year.

GRB Streamer is available from me at my website. It is copywrited commercial software.

I'll do this since it does seem like the tbs6903 setup would work better long term and be less resource intensive.

Has there been any work trying other tuner cards like the tbs6902 or even other brands such a digital devices.
The TBS6902 has a Broadcom BCM4505 tuner/demodulator which can only output MPEG TS frames. At a lower level (required for GRB reception) are "baseband frames". The TBS6902 does not output baseband frames.

I did get the Digital Devices Cine S2 V7A working well with GRB. But I think that they are discontinued. There are probably some used ones around. But I would recommend holding out for either a TBS6903 (without the "X") or a TBS6983.

Or you can get a Novra S400 Pro box with GRB Licenses . Not sure what the current price is.
