"I was wrong for doing that stuff," Giambi told the newspaper Wednesday before the Yankees played the Chicago White Sox. "What we should have done a long time ago was stand up -- players, ownership, everybody -- and said: 'We made a mistake.'


"We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and gone forward. ... Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it."

Giambi reportedly told a grand jury during the BALCO investigation in December 2003 that he used steroids and human growth hormone. He told USA Today this week he's thankful for MLB's testing program for steroids and amphetamines that was revised before last season. MLB does not test for HGH, but Giambi said he does not use the drug.

"Unfortunately, (the rumors) are going to be a part of it. But that's OK. I'm probably tested more than anybody else. I'm not hiding anything," he said. "That stuff didn't help me hit home runs. I don't care what people say, nothing is going to give you that gift of hitting a baseball."

Giambi told USA Today on Wednesday that an apology for the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball is long overdue. "I was wrong for doing that stuff," Giambi said to the newspaper before a game against the Chicago White Sox. The San Francisco Chronicle reported in December 2004 that Giambi told a grand jury that he had injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003 season. Giambi publicly had denied taking performance-enhancing drugs, but his December 11, 2003 testimony contradicted those statements.

According to transcripts of testimony obtained by the Chronicle, Giambi told the grand jury he had used several kinds of steroids obtained from Greg Anderson, the personal trainer of San Francisco Giants superstar Barry Bonds.

That led Giambi to call a press conference in February 2005, in which he apologized but never addressed the reasons for the apology "due to legal issues."

Giambi is now thankful for MLB's revamped steroid and amphetamine testing program. Giambi also said he does not use HGH, although MLB does not test for the drug.

"Unfortunately, (the rumors) are going to be a part of it, but that's OK. I'm probably tested more than anybody else," Giambi told USA Today. "I'm not hiding anything. That stuff didn't help me hit home runs. I don't care what people say, nothing is going to give you that gift of hitting a baseball."

The 36-year-old Giambi declined to answer when asked why he took steroids.
"Maybe one day I'll talk about it, but not now," he said.

Personally, I am NOT a Giambi fan, so I could care less what happens.

Notice this type of stuff never comes out when the Yankees are winning ????
Once things are mostly lost, then the discontent whining and admissions come out.

An apology from MLB and the Owners and the players asssociation, to the fans is long overdue. None of this can be undone. So lets make the apology and institute whatever drug testing is necessary to restore honor and order to this fine game. We'll just label all records from this era as the "steroid era" and go from there. As Giambi, if he's really sorry, he would turn over his MVP award to Frank Thomas, who REALLY earned it.

Good point....I was wondering this the other. I read where a few ball players have got the lasik eye surgery....wouldn't THAT be considering cheating?? I mean you ARE artificially enhancing a VERY VITAL, if not THE most important part of hitting....??

I head also ready the one ball player, Craig Biggio takes almost 12 ADVIL or was it IBPROFEN....either way, he takes 12 A DAY!! Is it THAT illegal, that pills helps to ARTIFICIALLY alleviate swelling and muscle pain.....

You miss understood the context of my posting....and totally lost the point. Sidekick was talking about 'bennies' as little boosters, so to speak, to give players a little edge....wouldn't ANYTHING that 'artificially enhances' your performance cheating?
