That's why I right click on the thumbnails and select, Open In New Tab. The tabs are a lot easier to close than trying to find the windows that (used to) spawn when you click on the thumbnail. While pictures in the tabs are loading, I can continue to read the thread. Then, when the pictures have probably loaded, I check them out. And, there's no viewer that monopolizes the active window/tab.
