AT&T T +0.79% has approached DirecTV DTV +1.32% about a possible acquisition of the satellite TV firm, say people familiar with the situation, the latest sign of a possible shakeup in the television industry.
A combination of AT&T with satellite TV firm DirecTV would create a pay television giant close in size to where Comcast Corp. CMCSA +0.41% will be if it completes its pending acquisition of Time Warner Cable. TWC +0.09%
DirecTV is the second biggest pay TV operator, serving about 20 million customers, while AT&T's landline-based TV business serves about 5.7 million. The nearly 26 million subscribers served by the combined company would compare with Comcast which—with TWC—would serve close to 30 million subscribers.
A deal would likely be worth at least $40 billion, DirecTV's current market capitalization, a fraction of AT&T's $185 billion market capitalization.

If this is approved, it'll be difficult not to also approve the comcast twc merger. Direct and att compete in some markets twc and comcast don't.

I see AT&T having both satellite & U-Verse tv just like Shaw Direct has both cable & satellite TV in Canada,IF they merge with Directv. They'll for sure drop POTS & maybe DSL.would ATT dump uverse tv?

Cant drop DSL. Uverse uses VDSL.
Guys, the Uverse runs ON the landlines, landlines supply the Uverse, so I don't see landlines going anywhere, unless they drop the Uverse all together or find a way for the Uverse to go wireless from the VRAD ... which has been mentioned years ago, but haven't heard anything since.
I was pretty sure this was due to the fact that AT&T sold northeastern lines to Frontier...AT&T is already dropping UVERSE here in Connecticut.
