Has anyone given any thought about that more digital stations could show up once analog is cutoff? What I mean is, could we receive more digital stations from a greater distance without analog in the way or would we not have as much skip possible.

One possibility is that some stations will put the digital signal on their old, high power VHF transmitters. That might mean a better digital signal in some places.

I thought they had to give up those frequencies.

They had to give up channels 2-6 (in most cases---there are some exceptions). A fair amount of stations that transmit analog on channels 7-13, will return to those channels as digital after February, 2009.

Preamp overload is very easy with both analog and digital stations on simultaneously. When the analogs go away, digital reception will be more forgiving on marginal antenna installations.
