LaCie 500GB (Porsche) External HDD

Ok, left unit powered up overnight as a test (I usually turn off when not in use). It apparently does go to a power-management mode as well as have an internal fan. Could not hear it running at all, but could feel it running (maybe fan?) by touching the unit--which was very cool to touch.

Here is what happened as part of my test. When I went to manage device, got the need to activate pop-up. I clicked OK. Then went to manage device again. This second time it responded immediately. So, no real issue. Either turn it off when not in use (and get the two off/on pop-ups) or leave it powered up and get a single activate pop-up.

Very pleased with the LaCie 500GB. May buy another for our second 622.

I noticed that too, very cool to the touch- and I leave it on 24/7. If there is a fan in there, it is dead quiet. I could feel a very faint draft out of it. I love this drive.

I got the same message about activating. I did the same as you and it worked fine. I didn't think of it being related to sleep-mode. It was one of those, "Oh, no... Whew..." and then I forgot about it.:)

This sounds like it might be a winner, now all I need is to learn how LaCie is pronounced...
Going back to my High School French (over 20 yrs ago), I believe it would be "law SEE", meaning The Company (with Cie being an abbreviation as Co is in English).

Salut!

EDIT: after posting, I found this...
It's a common question and you almost got it right: it's pronounced Lah-See. La meaning –the– in French, and Cie meaning –co– which is short for company. So, literally, we're TheCo in English.

That sounds about right, but since I am an American I will say Lacy. lol

By the way, my LaCie was scheduled to arrive on the 31st, but it got to Sparks,Nv early this morning. So I half expected it to come today, well I sat here all day and finally on checking the DHL website it said that "The premises were closed, will try again on next business day" This happened once before and I called them on land line and the person I talked to laughed and said that this happens often. I assume that they won't drive the 100 miles to my burg everyday, so they lie about delivery attempts.

I actually know where Sparks is (been there a time or two) and Susanville rings a bell. Is that near Grass Valley? I spent nearly a decade in Northern California in Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, and Middletown. BTW, mine arrived a day earlier than expected which is pretty shocking for things here in North Mexico (aka South Texas).

Susanville is north of Reno about 85 miles. My wife has cousins in Santa Rosa, so I have been there a few times. You must be near Puerto Rico or Rome, huh?

I now know why Susanville rings a bell. A good friend has been there and I was asking him about it. That was about 5 years ago.

I have an 8-month-old LaCie 500 Gb Porsche with a Hitachi Desk Star HD in it that works great (its not as quiet as I would like but I can live with it). I like it enough that I ordered two more, so I'd have a nice little stack, knowing I'd just have to use them one at a time for now...

My two new ones arrive, and I'm thinking that they will have Samsung HDs in them, which is cool because everyone is reporting that they work just fine. The problem is, the 622 has a hard time mounting them--they have to be turned on, fully spun up, and then you have to connect them to the 622 and hope the "unsupported USB device" screen doesn't pop up. Disconnect, reconnect, repeat as required until it mounts properly.

Then they are flakey as hell after that, they unmount and remount at random... So I go ahead and connect them to my computer, just out of curiousity, and they have freaking Seagate HDs in them! :(

So Monday, I guess I will call LaCie and ask them if there is any way for them to swap them out for units with either Hitachi or Samsung HDs in them. They probably won't and I will end up just getting a refund. But this sucks, cuz I wanted a nice little stack.

By the way, my original one continues to work GREAT!

Hey Red, How is your Porsche running? I have mine working, but it is really slow on transfers and when playing content from the external it has audio and some video stuttering. Got my new Dish VIP 722 installed today, works fine.

I had some stuttering during playback after I first got the drive. I haven't seen the problem since, though. I have a couple of theories on that:
1) The file was a football game in HD (mpeg2); maybe it was due to the size of the file?
2) There may have been another operation in progress.

I can't really say for sure on either of these possibilities. However, since then I have been able to play back all files with no trouble. I have been careful to make sure no other operation is in progress, though. I have not noticed any issues with transfer speeds.

I'm pretty happy with the drive (still) and can already see the need to get another one or two. The recent post about different drives having poor results is cause for concern though.

Another person with these problems said the he re-formatted his drive to Fat 32 spanning and then set cache for faster performance and that solved his problems, I'm thinking I might transfer all my recordings back to dvr, then see what options I can find on the cd that came with the external drive. Also someone suggested using a powered usb hub, and I have one of those, will try that first.

Let me know what you find. That bit about setting the cache for faster performance... I'd like to know how that is done.

Also, the powered USB hub should not be a factor since the drive is getting power from the external power supply. It should be drawing NO power from the USB connection.

I didn't even pay attention to the included CDROM, I just plugged it in and let the box format the drive.

You can read about the re-format trick, it is by Paradox, just down from this thread. He has a different drive then we do.

Ok, Problem solved, this morning I hooked up a powered usb hub, then I tried to turn the drive on and the light would not turn on on the drive. It seems as though the power connection is not real solid on the back of the drive, I forced it in and now all is well, transfers both ways are fast and playback of already recorded items show no skips, drop-outs, etc. The drive had been disconnected yesterday while the 722 was being installed, so I suspect I had not fully seated the power connection both yesterday and when I originally installed the drive.
