I am in Utah and was curious if you can see both Anik F1R and F2 from the same dish. I rent, so I don't want to put two dishes up, when one can do the trick.

I would go with the 75cm for sure and go from there.

Yes, no problem. You should be able to use the 60CM dish with no problem. A 75cm will help with rain fade, but it's quite a bit larger, requires a thicker mast, and costs more to ship.

for that far south, use the 75cm, believe me the cost is well worth it. sometimes you find a good deal on new 75cm on Ebay, I did.

When I ordered mine, the dealer told me that the 60CM dishes were working fine as far as Florida. At one time, before they replaced the satellites, the 75CM dish was needed.

I ordered the 75cm and regretted it; I thought it was a waste of money. I was getting most transponders in the high 70's and mid 80's on both sats with the 75CM...it's my understanding that is excellent signal, as good as some get in Canada, and I'm further south than you are.

Should you decide to go with the 75CM, KUSAT offers an upgrade.

I have a 75e and get +10.0 on most signals. I did do an install for a guy locally (Minneapolis) on a 60e and his numbers were a little lower (+8.0) but still good

I was thinking there was 2.0 difference in between the two sizes. also to note, F1R is the new satellite with about -3db less then F1 had here.

He just told me that the signal could be received just fine as far as Florida with a 60cm.

I still wish that I had took his advice and got the 60cm. That 75cm was too much dish for 2 sats.

Since this guy is concerned with the owner, there is no way I would recommend a 75e when a 60e will work just fine.

In Florida, I would definitely go with the 75. Every bit of signal helps to keep rain fade to a minimum. A 60 will work OK these days, though it was dicey with the old F1 bird.

as much rain as Florida gets, I would go with a 75cm if I wanted something compact but if I wanted something with some bite, I would go w/ 2 90cm dishes tied in.

The guy who started this thread is in Utah. He should be OK with a 60cm. If he is concerned with the owner, there is no need to push the issue. As far as size, the 75cm is close to the Dish Network's superdish. The 60cm is close to DirecTv's tripe LNB dish(the fiberglass version) Even the Dish guy told me that lots of owners do not like the superdishes.

I'm close to switching to Starchoice because I've lost a number of HD channels from Bell. I'm in Los Angeles -- can I get away with 60cm here? And either with the 60cm or 75, can I mount it on a wall, as I have with my Dish1000-type dishes? Or is so heavy that I need a special, reinforced mount, such as with Directv's news AT9s? (I don't have any experienc with the Directv 3lnb dish, so I don't know how to compare to anything I'm familiar with.)

I have a SC 75cm dish mounted on the wall. the mast is 2 inches round and the mount is almost like the same on a Bell or Dish system but bigger, it does not have the support arms like the AT-9's. I have had no trouble with that mount or dish since I put it in over 1 1/2 year ago or so.

Anyone that recommends a 60 cm antenna for Star Choice reception in southern locales such as California and other border states near the Mexican border has either never been there and installed an antenna, or cannot appreciate the need for extra signal margin as you get away from central Canada. It's all about mathematics; gain of antennas versus actual signal level in a given location. While 60 cm might be nicer to please your neighbors from an aesthetic point of view, it falls far short of the 75 cm model.

Notice that southern Ontario gets a signal in the +49 to +50 dBw range.
Southern states are between +46 and +47 dBw. This is almost 3 dB weaker than what people are using in central Canada, or the target area. Also notice the green +48 dBw contour, which is within about 100 miles of the Canadian border on the west coast, and 150-200 miles south of Canadian soil in the Eastern US. I would not recommend the 60 E antenna anywhere outside this green line. While a determined installer can make it work outside this area, the signal margin above threshold (or the point where there is not enough signal to provide reliable service) is not that impressive.

To look at it another way; Suppose you are in southern Ontario with a 60-E antenna and a +50 dBw signal. Go to Los Angeles, where signal is closer to +46.5 to +47 dBw (or 3 to 3.5 dB LESS signal). Even if you put a 75-E antenna in place at the Los Angeles location, it does not have that much more gain than the 60-E to fully make up the 3 to 3.5 dB lower signal level. Since rainfall is not as common in California, the 75-E is considered quite acceptable in most situations.
Somewhere earlier in this discussion, the reason for wondering about getting a larger dish was to NOT encounter problems similar to those when attempting to receive Bell ExpressVu. Bigger antennas are always a good idea in maintaining reliability. Those that tell you otherwise should go back to high school and study their physics and mathematics again.

Do you consider Utah to be a "southern local"? A 60cm will work fine in NC. The only weak channel was CTV HD, that transponder came in the 60's.

I just want these people to be able to compare the sizes before getting a dish that is larger than what they expected. Also, if someone wants to put it on a pole, they might have a hard time finding a 2" pole or the 2" pipe adaptor.

My F1R was stronger than F2 I looked at the F2 here for KU http://www.telesat.ca/satellites/footprints/index.htm and saw that I'm between 46-48, that's my guess as to why I would have no trouble with a 60cm here.

I will say that my Dish Network would go out a lot sooner than *C with the 75cm dish during a storm.

BTW, 60 or 75 takes a 2 inch pipe (pole) to mount.

bottom line, make it were you can enjoy the system with less trouble.
