No signal using HDMI on non HD channels

We have the standard HD receiver and the HDMI output works fine on HD channels but if we switch to a standard channel I donot have picture or audio, black screen. Is this normal?

No it is not normal. Are you able to see if it occurs using component cables?

What type of TV do you have and is the HDMI from the Rec directly to the TV or through a AV processor?

Did it ever work?

Is Native Set to On or OFF in HDTV Menu on the Rec?

Is your TV set to only accept 720p/1080i/1080p?

normal operation with components but lacking quality of the HDMI

no, operates fine with component and s-video

Few things you can try:

1. Set native off, remove all options except 1080i and 1080p.
2. Make sure you have hdmi 1.3 cables.

native off made zero difference
how do i know which HDMI have? a previous generation cable wouldnt support 480?

Doubtful that 1.3 hdmi will fix the problem, could be worth a try though.
