Is anyone using this drive with their ViP622/722 receiver? Mine is scheduled to arrive next week. I've seen where people are having troubles with some drives and wonder what I can expect.

Specifically, I would like to know who the drive manufacturer is. Somewhere I read that it might be a WD drive. I was able to find that the quadra model uses a Hitachi drive, but cannot find anything on this specific model.

When it arrives I will post in the review section with as many details as I can glean.

Thanks and cheers!

I just read 46 customer reviews at Amazon on this drive. They are mostly good, but the one thing that is not good is the support from LaCie, it sounds like there is none.

LaCie assembles drives from other manufacturers components. So, they really are not qualified for much tech support. Samsung drives are in a lot of them, but I can't tell you exactly which ones.
If you check reviews at Newegg, they are mostly positive.

I'll vouch for them, too. We use them at a major Fortune 500 company for short term critical data archival purposes. They work well for quickly transferring relatively small amounts of data between sites.

Did your company ever need repair service, if so, how was it?

No. We wouldn't even bother. We would just have the drive destroyed. (Can't chuck a drive with data on it.) I can't ever remember any failing. Tapes are another issue. However, we had good luck with those drives.

I think I've seen the same generally positive reviews (and one or two negative). Seems like the only issues have to do with support.

This is the first I've come across Samsung as a supplier to LaCie. I'm very curious to learn who makes this particular model. If anyone gets this drive, please hook it up to your computer and check the drive before letting the 622 format it.

Cheers,

For critical (and confidential) corporate data; the way to go is with the LaCie drives with encryption built in via a fingerprint reader.

There's a bit of a premium; but with the encryption you can feel a bit safer if/when you have to chuck the drive.

Cheers,

I bought my 500 GB LaCie from Amazon for $119 and have been using it on my 622 since the 15 and has worked perfectly. Like rdinkel says, it matches and looks great next to the 622.

I just ordered the same from Amazon $119. Can you tell me which drive is in yours? Also are the last numbers of the model 103U?

The one I ordered from Amazon ends in model 103U and is supplied by a third party. I placed the order on 8/15 and it is scheduled to arrive 8/23. More to follow then. :)

I put mine in the cart and then looked at the WB500, The LaCie was to be from third party. When I made my decision to buy the LaCie I noticed that it was now direct from Amazon, so I saved the shipping charge.

Interesting... I just checked and saw the change you described. Looks like I got the short end of that stick.:(

You'll probably get yours sooner, too!

Just to clarify: when you say it is working perfectly, does that mean that it works perfectly right out of the box? Or, did you have to tweak any settings to get it "perfect". Sorry, I have to ask! ;) I've read too many accounts of people having issues with Seagate drives and am hoping that I don't see any similar issues.

The free shipping adds a few days to to the delivery time, I will be lucky if I get it before the end of the month. I am thinking the drive will be a Samsung. By the way I read some bad reports on th model with the 104U number on the end, might have been 105U. I just got my auto confirmation from Amazon, delivery between 8-31 and 9-6

I plugged it in, went to Manage the drive, it formatted it and it's worked flawlessly. No tweaking at all.

Does this drive go into sleep mode and then wake up and be seen by the 622 when you go to manage it? Have you tried turning it off until you need it again?

I, too ordered this drive from Amazon for the $119 price (also was able to take advantage of my Prime shipping, so I got it in two days 'free'). I wasn't able to hook it up and activate external storage until Sunday eve, and it worked great. Did a transfer of 'Blue Planet' off of Discovery HD and tested playback from the unit...worked fine w/ no tweaks/issues.

I've also done a power off/on and the 622 doesn't seem to have any issue with this--a dialogue pops up asking if you want to manage the drive or not and you're off and running.

The reason I bought this drive is I've been using the 320GB model as external storage for music/photos on my Xbox 360 and it worked great...its small, nice looking and silent. Perfect for these kinds of entertainment center applications, imho.

And I've used various Lacie products for years and like them very much.
