C Band and a 120cm dish... pointless?Thu, 08 May 2025 03:57:21 +0000
https://www.satelliteguys.us/xen/threads/c-band-and-a-120cm-dish-pointless.415865/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss
415865invalid@example.com (nwkn1g)nwkn1gI was given a terrible ground mount 120cm dish. I paired it with a Titanium C140 lnb and have only been successful locking onto 105w 3881H. I scan in and can watch the CH-1, CH-2 and CH-3 channels but no matter what, nothing else locks.
Where the dish is currently sitting I can only see a small portion of the arc. I'm wondering if there are any other birds out there that might be possible before I try moving it somewhere else. Or is it a lost cause and I should just put a KU lnb on it...

415833invalid@example.com (k4otl)k4otlThis may seem like an exercise in self-inflicted headaches, and I haven't found any info on this, but here goes:
My location isn't great for "looking" at my southernmost sat, which is 82W. I pretty much can't put my C band dish where it can see that part of the arc due to trees (well I could but it'd be 5' off the road, no thanks). For Ku it's not as bad, I can put a motorized dish to see 82W, but it wouldn't see anything west of 110W at best. For C band I chose the location of the...

405780invalid@example.com (cyberham)cyberhamToday I began a mini-project to try to receive Intelsat 18 at 180.0E. This is the satellite with content from French Polynesia but with a footprint that covers the western portion of North America with a signal strong enough that it should be receivable with a 60 to 75 cm Ku dish.
For my location, dish elevation is about 13 degrees, azimuth is 243 degrees (true) and skew is a little more than 34 degrees positive. I adjusted a Shaw Direct 60e dish for these settings. Fortunately my dish is...

415808invalid@example.com (Pepper)PepperNow that Dish has ceased their international services which used Anik F3 at 118.7 W, maybe it will be used for something else. Questions that come to mind:
- that satellite was circular polarity, Ku FSS band. Is the polarity scheme in the "hardware" of the satellite or controlled by the uplink?
- On a "standard" FTA receiver what would be the parameters needed to scan it using the Dish500+ LNBF? I know the stacked LNBFs require higher voltage so I set it to H and tried every frequency...

413883invalid@example.com (k4otl)k4otlI finally got my Ku-band setup running a week ago, I had acquired a used Hughesnet dish (36") for free, bought lnb with holder and a GT media V9 prime receiver, and 8 months ago or so gave up as I could not lock SES 1 (101 W) or G19 (97W). I finally got back to it a week ago, thinking I'd never line things up but latched onto some sats, then fine tuned to SES 1 and then moved over slightly to G19. This website and all the forums provide VERY good info for those starting out and I'd like to...

412074invalid@example.com (cyberham)cyberhamTomorrow I will go to Japan. I have been looking for a direct contact with anybody in Japan who happens to enjoy FTA but haven't found anybody yet. I've heard there are a few who pursue this activity though mostly on C-band I believe. If anybody has any direct contact with either a supplier or individual in Japan who is involved in FTA, it would be nice to be able to source a Ku-band dish of suitable size. Most dishes I've found are very small and are intended for commercial Ku-band...

I was trying to scan in the wild feed of the Saskatchewan junior hockey game on an adjacent transponder and noticed that my Edision no longer sees the NBC mux. I couldn't lock on the hockey game either. For comparison, I am watching with no issues PBS HD01 at 9.4 dB C/N via a 1.2 m Channelmaster. It is possible that the...

415513invalid@example.com (Dawgsfan)DawgsfanI came across this story about a man in Ontario, Canada who picked up North Korean TV broadcasts with what I think is a C-band satellite. I'm guessing the signals were FTA.
From a technical perspective, how is this possible? I didn't think a satellite TV signal could travel that far. How large can satellite footprints be? Thanks.
