I wired my home for cable back in 1983 before the walls were closed up. I wired it using the best quality RG59 cable from Belden, the number stamped on the cable is 9274 and the numbers on the box the cable came in are 1-9274-500-010 and U399. The shielding is tightly braided copper over aluminum foil.
Not being knowledgeable about the how cable TV worked or the proper method of installing cable in my home this is what I did.
I have a TV Antenna mounted in the attic of my 2 story home from which I ran (30ft) from a 300Ohm converter attached to the antenna a 75 Ohm cable to my basement where it is plugged into an amplifier (RadioShack 1in, 4out using just one out) from the amplifier I ran it to an A/B switch.
The input from Satellite/Cable enters into the basement, where it is connected to the A/B Switch.
From the A/B Switch I go into an amplifier (RadioShack 1in 2out) 1 output is being used by a TV in the basement and the other is into a 4 way splitter. From basement splitter I use only 2 outputs the 4 way for cables (30ft each) up to the 2nd story of my home. Each of these cables is input into another 4 way splitter and from the 4 ways I have cable leading to 2 outlets in each of the 4 bedrooms. The other cable from the basement splitter is to a 4 way splitter for my 1st floor. On my first floor I have 3 outlets in my family room and 2 in my living room (1 outlet not currently wired).
I use 75 Ohm terminators on all of the unused or open outputs.
The DISH installer said that my cable would be OK and used my existing RG59 cable. He disconnected many of my splitters and made the connections as direct as possible using my wiring. Many of my rooms don’t have a satellite or TV Antenna signal available to them at this time. . I ran the RG-59 cable in my home using Belden 9274 and radio shack splitters and amplifiers in 1983. The Dish installation manuals warn about RG-59 and also state that cable not rated at 950-2150MHz is not to be used, what’s the problem beside possible signal loss?
The technology has advanced significantly since I first installed my cable and I would like to update my system as much as possible. All my equipment is primarily from RadioShack and up to 22 years old. I would like to complete all the connections to all of my rooms.
